Photography and Film

No medium is more expressive or revealing than photography and film can be. Even in the context of burgeoning new media, the film industry remains the single most profitable artistic medium in contemporary society; U.S. companies grossed of over $28 billion in box office receipts in 2010. A photograph, such as Cindy Sherman's Untitled # 96 which sold at auction for $3.9 million in May, 2011, can be worth much more than a thousand words, both literally and figuratively.

With all of its value and prominence in modern culture, there is surprisingly little published information available to guide visual artists. From permit processes to publicity rights and model releases, there is a complexity to the legal aspects of photography that can frustrate artists, taking their valuable time away from what they need to focus on: their art. In recognition of this issue, we have begun a legal field guide for artists, titled The Art of Art Law, to make these issues more readily accessible, all in one place.

Of course, a field guide can only help acquaint an artist with the legal issues impacting a field. To analyze complex issues that artists may face in a project, a lawyer is often needed. The attorneys at Beckman, Burns & Nguyen have a passion for this area of the law, and pride themselves on delivering large firm quality at small firm rates for new artists and art businesses alike.
